Respiratory Therapist
Summary
Provides respiratory care services to the patient; consults with medical and direct care staff regarding therapy techniques and procedures; performs related work.
Duties
- Coordinates and performs respiratory therapy services to the patient
- Markets and promotes the respiratory services of the company to referral sources and health care community
- Coordinates and performs quality assurance and maintenance services on respiratory equipment as described in the maintenance reference manuals
- Delivers and instructs the patient and/or care giver(s) on the proper and safe use of respiratory equipment
- Follow U.S. Department of Labor Infection control recommendations (Title 29 CFR 1910.1030)
- Instructs the patient and/or care giver(s) on infection control procedures and cleaning of the equipment
- Assists management to ensure all equipment policies and procedures are in compliance with government and Medicare Quality Standards
- Coordinates and/or completes the admission, care plan and discharge of patients receiving respiratory services
- Coordinates and/or completes all equipment maintenance management records as required by the organization
- Coordinates and assists with obtaining all prescriptions and/or physician orders
- Completes necessary forms required for government reimbursement and Medicare Quality Standards. Completes specific respiratory therapy documentation and forwards to the billing department
- Conducts or arranges in-services for staff relating to respiratory equipment service.
Qualifications

- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Valid driver's license.
Education/Experience
- Associate degree or higher from accredited respiratory therapy program.
Language Ability
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before patients and workforce members of organization.
Math Ability
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: word processing software; spreadsheet software; and order processing systems.
Certificates and/or Licenses
- Must maintain current professional licensure
- Valid driver’s license.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage operational responsibilities of support staff associated with contract negotiation and administration.
Continuing Education
- Respiratory therapist must obtain the required number of continuing education units (CEU) to maintain credentials
- Must maintain the state licensure to practice respiratory therapy services in the state where the respiratory therapist works
- Must attend periodic in-service or training classes as designated by management.
